Western Macedonia has a long history in viniculture and in production of high-quality wines. It produces the significant AOHQ wines (Appellation of Origin of High Quality) and also other local wines.
The vine growers of Amyntaio have set their vineyards all around Vergotida lake, where they cultivate as a principal variety the native Xinomavro. Τhis area, at 750 meters altitude, represents an ideal location for the production of red, rosé and sparkling wines with AOHQ indication. The combination of Roditis, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer varieties, creates the white Local Wines of Florina.
The steady winds, combined with the continental climate, represent a source of dew for the vineyards of Velventos – a town of Kozani. The grape vines are rarely affected by diseases, so the region permits the development of many forms of biological viticulture. The Local Wines of Velventos are produced from the grape varieties Roditis, Chardonnay, Trebbiano, Batiki, Xinomavro, Moschomavro, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon.
The region has a brilliant history in wine production, as evidenced by the fact that its wines were an export product as far back as the 19th century. Nowadays, nearly 250 acres of land “receive” Xinomavro and the indigenous Moschomavro, which when sun-dried or dried indoor give the famous straw wine of Siatista.
